7 Tiny Rituals That Helped Our Toddler Feel Seen with a Newborn at Home

Adding Madison made our hearts bigger and our schedules…interesting. Kayden was excited from day one and never really jealous—he just folded her into his day. These rituals aren’t to “fix” anything; they reinforce the good and keep him feeling seen without needing more hours.
The Rituals
• Timer “Special Time” (10 min) — Kayden picks; I narrate like a sportscaster: “Blue
car passes the red one! Victory lap!”
• The Helper Badge — Laminated card that says “Kayden is today’s Helper.” One job
per block (diaper run, doorbell captain).
• High‑Five Hand‑off — Every time I pass Madison to Amanda, Kayden gets a high five.
He’s part of the exchange.
• Snack DJ — He chooses the snack soundtrack (volume rules apply).
• Photo Pick — He chooses the fridge photo each night.
• Bedtime “Rewind” — 60 seconds of what he did that day, in his words; I repeat it
back.
• The “When Baby Then Kayden” Rule — After a baby task, there’s a Kayden task.
Predictable, not perfect.
Scripts That Reduced Meltdowns
• When he wants me during a feed: “I see you. I’m feeding Madison for three minutes,
then it’s Kayden’s turn. Want to set the timer?”
• When toys get thrown: “Toys want gentle hands. Let’s jump 10 times and try again.”
• When he says ‘Go away baby’: “You want more dad time. That makes sense. We can
be mad and kind at the same time.”
Our 3 Ninja Moves
• Pre‑empt the hard moments (pre‑nap/late afternoon) with a 5‑minute couch cuddle
and a book.
• Use movement. Ten jumps or hallway races beat a thousand words.
• Narrate out loud. “I’m putting down the phone because Kayden asked me to watch
the tower.”
