For Kayden’s 4th birthday, we did something big:
We took him to Disney.
Was it magical? Absolutely. Was it also exhausting, expensive, and chaotic? Also yes.
Here’s the real story—what worked, what didn’t, and whether it was worth it.
Why We Did It
Four felt like the perfect age:
- Old enough to remember it
- Old enough for most rides
- Young enough to believe in the magic
Seeing his face when he first saw the castle? Worth everything.
What Worked
Going at His Pace
We didn’t try to do everything. Some days we hit the park hard. Other days we chilled at the hotel pool.
Following his energy—not a checklist—made it way more enjoyable.
The Character Moments
Meeting his favorite characters was the highlight. We prioritized those over rides, and it paid off.
Pro tip: Book character dining in advance. Worth the cost for guaranteed face time without long lines.
Bringing Snacks
Park food is expensive and lines are long. Having snacks in the bag kept meltdowns at bay.
The Birthday Button
Disney gives free birthday buttons. Cast members wished him happy birthday all day. He felt like a celebrity.
What Was Hard
The Heat + Crowds
Florida in summer is brutal. We did early mornings, midday breaks, and evening returns. Essential.
Managing Expectations
Some rides were too scary. Some lines too long. Handling disappointment is part of it.
The Cost
Let’s be real—Disney isn’t cheap. Tickets, hotel, food, souvenirs… it adds up fast.
We set a souvenir budget in advance and stuck to it (mostly).
Tips for Other Dads
- Get Genie+ — Skip the lines. Worth every dollar.
- Pack a stroller — Even if they “don’t need one.” They will.
- Stay on property — Early entry makes a huge difference.
- Lower expectations — You won’t see everything. That’s okay.
- Take photos, but also put the phone down — Be in the moments.
Was It Worth It?
100%.
Not because it was perfect—it wasn’t.
But watching my son experience pure magic? Seeing him believe in something bigger than himself?
That’s a memory I’ll have forever.
And now he won’t stop talking about going back.
So I guess we’re doing this again someday. 😅
