Where to go when you’ve got a 3-year-old, two dogs, and a half-charged coffee in hand
- Toddler-friendly playgrounds
- Plenty of shady spots for a picnic
- Dogs on leash = lots of tail wags, no complaints
- Arrive early on weekends
- Pack sand toys and snacks
- Grab a treat at Coffee Importers — they even give out pup cups
3. Balboa Island Walk (Newport Beach)
Yes, it’s a little busier, but the stroller-friendly loop around Balboa Island is one of our favorite early evening walks. The views are gorgeous, there’s something calming about watching the boats drift by, and the dogs love the social energy.
Bonus: You have to grab a frozen banana. It’s a local rite of passage.
4. Irvine Spectrum (Believe It or Not)
It might not scream “outdoorsy,” but when we need a family-friendly outing with options, this place works. Kayden rides the carousel, Amanda sneaks in a little shopping, I do a quick mental reset, and the dogs (when they join) enjoy the open-air layout.
Parent tip: The giant lawn in front of the movie theater is great for toddlers to burn off energy while you sip a coffee in peace.
5. Top of the World (Laguna Beach)
This one’s for the brave days — when everyone’s fed, napped, and in a good mood. The views are incredible, and the wide trails make it easy to manage a toddler-dog combo if you bring a hiking carrier or sturdy stroller.
Catch: There’s some uphill walking, but the payoff is big. And it feels good to earn your weekend carbs.
Final Thought
Not every outing is perfect — sometimes we leave early, sometimes we bribe with fruit snacks, and sometimes the dogs bark at squirrels like it’s a full-time job. But the memories we make outside the house? Those stick.
